Target is offering an interesting Black Friday deal: a 40" 1080p HDTV marked down from $583 to $300, first come first serve. It's not the best HDTV, but as the link says, for the price how can you go wrong?

This TV would be significantly larger than my current 27" 4:3 HDTV. I did the algebra: my 27" screen measures 21.6" wide by 16.2" tall, whereas the 40" HDTV would be a remarkable 34.9" wide by 19.6" tall. That level of size would really make movies pop.

And waiting in line for it wouldn't really be much of a hardship, either. Since 11 p.m. is my 5 p.m., they'd be letting me in the door at about the same time I'm used to going to bed. I could work on Thursday for the extra holiday pay, and take Friday off to sleep in.

The thing of it is, even saving almost $300, I'm not sure whether I'm really in a position to spend $300 on an HDTV right now. Especially since it would mostly have to go onto my credit card, which I only just finished paying down, spending back up, and (mostly) paying down again. That would also put me $300 further away from realizing my dream of possessing a $399 64-gig iPod Touch.

But on the other hand, $300 for a huge widescreen TV? One that would weigh a lot less than the lead-lined monstrosity that makes me worry from time to time about the sturdiness of the table I have it sitting on? And that would let me watch any Blu-rays I get in the future in brilliant high-def quality?

I hate you, Black Friday.
