Rewatched Tokyo Raiders today. Amusing enough little HK flick, not the best film in the world but good enough for an action movie. Also watched Lupin III: Island of Assassins, one of the Funimation Lupins where they felt the need to change its original Japanese title, In Memory of the Walther P-38, to something completely different. At one point I happened to have the English track on by accident, and experienced Zenigata's voice. Gah! The Streamline and Manga Cagliostro dubs both did a great job casting Zenigata, getting the gruff tone of his voice exactly right. Funimation's Zenigata sounded like a reedy-voiced old man who might lecture a youngster about respecting his elders. Thank goodness for the original Japanese soundtrack.

But the highlight of the evening was when Sandy, that new friend I mentioned, dropped by so we could go see This Is Spinal Tap where it was being shown at a local live theater as an outreach project by the local art theater. I showed him a bit of my Castle of Cagliostro commentary before we left, and he was really impressed by it. Then we headed out to eat; I showed him to Georgio's Pizza and we talked. We hit it off really well—and I was really impressed to learn that he was friends or acquaintances with a couple of Hollywood movie production industry figures. (Probably best not to say who, but it's very possible I might end up meeting one of them; apparently he comes to Springfield fairly often to visit a relative.)

As for This Is Spinal Tap, well, I was somewhat annoyed to realize that the settings of the DVD player they used to play it were off; it was inputting a 4:3 signal to a 16:9 screen so that everyone seemed squashed. I told the attendant waiting outside about it, and when I stepped back out again later she told me that she'd checked and "it's supposed to be like that." Bah. If I'd known it was going to be like that, we could just have stayed at my place and watched it here.

But Sandy enjoyed it; the last time he'd seen the flick was in 1990 at college. He was completely unaware of the new DVD release, and its commentary track. Hopefully I can have him over again soon, this time to watch a movie here. I'm rather proud of my 27" TV and my 5.1 speaker system; whatever we watch will end up looking and sounding great.

But first, I'll have to mop the bathroom.
