ARGH!!! My Macintosh laptop's HD has apparently gone pfft. Machine won't boot at all off the HD. I've tried everything.

Now, under ordinary circumstances, this wouldn't be too bad. And heck, in the grand scheme of things, it still isn't too bad. But what's really killing me is that it had some things I was working on writing on the hard drive...things that I kept thinking "You know, maybe I should copy these back to my desktop machine's hard drive..." but never got around to doing. Argh, I feel so stupid!

And now it looks like I'll have to rewrite them from scratch. Several hours of work, down the tubes. But maybe I can make them even better in the rewrite.

Also annoying is the fact that I won't be able to take the laptop home when I go down to visit my parents on Sunday. Grr.

Oh well. A friend is sending me a 2-gig (smaaaaaall...though it's funny, at one time I thought 2 gigabytes was enormous) hard drive to use to test the machine and see if it really is the hard drive that's failed. If so, then I'll be able to order a nice 15-gig for about $70 that will be more than sufficient unto my needs on such a tiny little machine.

I guess I should just be glad that I didn't lose anything really important in the crash, and that I still have my Linux box to serve as my primary netting machine. Still, to be without the portability of the laptop for another couple of weeks will be annoying.
