My weekend

Probably not the best weekend I've ever had, but it's had its good points.

Saturday I was largely out of sorts, due in no small part to my cat vomiting on my carpet. I suppose that's one of the hazards of owning a cat. I cleaned it up as best I could, even going down to PetSmart to buy something that was supposed to be specially made for vomit cleanup. I paid $13 for it, got it home...and it turned out to be sawdust (with some additives). I paid $13 for a bottle of sawdust. Whoopee.

Spent much of the day reading a series of SF books I bought and downloaded from Palm Digital Media. It's amazing how well PDM's Windows reader software works under Linux. Of course, the downside to that was that once I got started reading, I really couldn't stop. Ended up finishing the book at 4 in the morning.

Went to bed not expecting to wake up before noon, but I got up at about 10:30 instead. As I was trying to decide whether to rush through shaving and go to church or just to try to go back to bed and sleep, someone knocked at my door. It turned out to be the US Mail. Funny thing, I didn't know that they delivered express packages on Sunday. My Kamen Rider Agito DVD set had arrived. If I hadn't been up at the time, I might not have heard the knock, so I took this as a portent that I ought to go to church today. Even though I ended up arriving about ten minutes past the hour, I still ended up being on time because they started late.

This afternoon, my brother Aaron called up and asked if I'd like to come over to the birthday party of my niece, Aeris (yes, she is named after the Final Fantasy character), who's about to turn 2. I figured why not, so I headed on down, getting in some shopping (including an Elmo stuffed toy as a present) along the way. The party was fun enough, though I didn't actually know most of the people there (relatives of the wife). Aeris was button-cute as usual, and funny. When everyone started singing happy birthday to her, she looked around like she didn't know what was going on, and then burst into tears. When she was proffered presents to unwrap, she gamely unwrapped the first few—sometimes seeming more interested in the paper inside the bags and boxes than the gifts themselves—until she got to the last two, then she decided she'd had enough and didn't want to unwrap any more. Heh.

After that, I headed home, and then my brother Alex (who lives in Chicago, but was in town for a friend's wedding and Aeris's birthday) came by and took me out for a steak dinner. I just got home a little while ago.

Between church, party, and dinner, I've watched a few episodes of Agito. It's an interesting series, though the subtitles (being the result of a Chinese translation run through a machine translator) are just barely good enough to work out what's going on. I look forward to seeing more of it, when I have the time.

Really should see about getting to bed; I've built up a bit of a sleep deficit over the last couple of days, and I'm working all day tomorrow for an exhorbitant salary.
