Well, I went by Commerce this morning on the way to work, and talked to one of the managerial people at the little desks. It seems that apparently there's been a check written in the precise amount of my first deposit...or at least, so their computers seem to think. She's requesting a copy of the check, and will tell me as soon as she gets it (within 24 to 48 hours) to whom it was written. If it was written. It seems rather odd to me that the check should be made out so precisely in the amount which I deposited; it seems to me to be some sort of weird clerical error. Either way, I'm switching banks as soon as this is all straightened out. US Bank is starting to look pretty good.

Bank shot

Well, my face is now officially red. The lady at Commerce Bank called me back saying that there hadn't actually been a check, it was an adjustment slip marked "empty envelope." I knew that couldn't be right, as I clearly remembered putting the money in the envelope and putting it in the ATM. She suggested that I check my car and see if the money might have fallen out somewhere. I thought this was a waste of time, but I agreed to do so, just on the off-chance that she might be right after all.

She was right after all. I found a sealed ATM envelope with $31 in it sitting on my passenger seat under some kipple. The only thing I can think is that I must have accidentally gotten two envelopes out of the ATM envelope dispenser, put money in one, then gotten confused and deposited the other.

At any rate, it's good that I'm not going to have to go back to the bank and start raising cain, and that I didn't actually lose any of that money. And since the error was mine, not Commerce's, I find myself rethinking my decision to change banks. I went to US Bank, the bank that my sister in law recommended, and picked up a brochure on the terms for their checking account, and they didn't seem quite so favorable as Commerce's did. And of course I have this inertia built up in that I already have checks from Commerce, and an ATM card, and I can deposit and transact now without having to wait for more stuff to come to me in the mail (not to mention paying money for new checks). Add to that the fact that I'd need to have $100 to start the account, which I do not currently have, and I don't have much incentive to overcome that inertia just at the moment.

Maybe later on; we'll see.
