I watched Neverwhere last night. I had previously read the novelization some time ago (which was when I first put the DVD set on my wish list), and found it brilliant and magical, a sort of Wizard of Oz or Alice in Wonderland for the 1990s—a normal guy happens to fall into a magical world that exists just behind the corner from everyday reality, and must go on a quest to find his way back home again. I'm sure I'd have loved it even more if I were a native Londoner and in a position to get all the little in-jokes.

Happily, the TV miniseries was every bit as magical as the book. I put it in last night only meaning to watch a bit of it, but ended up sitting raptly through all three hours. The actors were perfect for their roles. (Amusingly, I kept thinking about the lead actor, "That guy really looks a lot like Paul McCartney," then when I looked him up afterward found he'd played Paul in not one but two biopics.)

The one flaw with the production was that, due to a production decision to shoot on video and then "filmize" that wasn't carried through, the lighting ended up being a lot harsher and more garish than it should have been. But on the other hand, it kind of adds to the "otherworldly" feel of the thing, so it's not entirely bad.

Right now, I'm listening to my personalized holiday music station on Pandora and getting ready to go do my dishes and clean my kitchen. This station is another reminder of why I love Pandora so much. Instead of the insipid, overplayed drek that hits radio stations this time of year, I can choose the music that makes me remember why Christmas is supposed to be a time of joy rather than a time of bland annoyance.

And I have to say, cleaning my kitchen is a chore where I'm going to need all the joy I can get.
