[livejournal.com profile] demiurgent pointed this story out to me in text chat.

Turns out Sarah Palin knows, and has always known, that Africa is a continent after all.

Apparently the major newsmedia were consistently taken in by a hoax: a political commentator and supposed advisor to John McCain who did not, in fact, actually exist. In fact, it's been sitting around spitting out false information about both campaigns all through the entire election cycle.

Here's a New York Times article on the affair.

Heh. The shock isn't that someone could pull this off, but rather that he could keep doing it months after being debunked.

Then again, people continue to believe in LOTS of things that have been repeatedly and conclusively debunked....

Hehehe, in the interest of veracity, I'd feel remiss if I didn't point out that while this story certainly debunks good old Martin Eisenstadt, it doesn't, in fact, show that Palin actually knows (let alone has always known) that Africa is a continent. I mean, really, odds are good that she knows this, but this story doesn't prove that she does. :-)
