Morning at the parental home.
Oct. 12th, 2008 10:58 amMorning at the parents' place.
I slept pretty well during the night, only pained by my leg a few times. Getting up to walk across the hall to the bathroom to use the toilet there was a little exhausting each time I had to do it, but I was delighted to find that doing "my business" was a lot less frustrating and dehumanizing than it had been in the hospital.
I was awakened by the parents' getting up at about 5:45, and dozed until 6:30 when they came to get me for breakfast. We had popover pastries; I could only eat one, but at least I could eat it. I'm sure my appetite will return as I get stronger. Then the parents headed off to church. They'll probably expect me to come to church next week or the week after, depending on how strong I'm feeling. I'm sort of ambivalent about it, but I'll get by.
After they left, I went back to bed and dozed for a while, listening to a Loreena McKennitt album, "The Visit." Then I decided I'd use a little portable DVD player my friend Sandy loaned me to watch one of the DVDs I'd brought home.
It was a bit of an interesting experience getting everything set up; it rather reminded me of one of those text adventure games where you have to go around finding the right pieces of things in different rooms of an area, then assemble them to meet your objective.
In fact, it went a little something like this:
> You are in the computer room in your parents' house. It is light. You probably won't be eaten by a grue.
> INVENTORY
> DVD player, "CQ" DVD
> PUT DVD PLAYER ON DESK
> Done
> PLUG DVD PLAYER IN BEHIND DESK
> You can't reach the plug-in from your wheelchair!
> GO TO LIVING ROOM.
> Done
> GET EXTENSION CORD
> Gotten
> GO TO COMPUTER ROOM
> Done
> PLUG EXTENSION CORD INTO WALL BY DOOR
> Done
> PLUG DVD PLAYER INTO EXTENSION CORD
> Done
> PUT CQ DVD IN DVD PLAYER
> It's still in the bubble wrap!
> OPEN CQ DVD
> You scrabble ineffectually at the shrink wrap with your blunt fingernails.
> GO TO KITCHEN
> Done.
> GET STEAK KNIFE
> Gotten
> GO TO COMPUTER ROOM
> Done.
> OPEN CQ DVD
> The shrink wrap and security stickers part like grade A prime!
> PUT DVD IN PLAYER
> Done.
> WATCH DVD
> Enjoy the show!
After the movie (pretentious, but an interesting meditation on the nature of filmmaking), I called one of my next door neighbors, who has my spare door key and is helping out with things. I thanked her for her help, then talked her through the process of resetting the wireless router in my apartment so I could reach my server computer in my guest room. I also heard some interesting things about another of the neighbors' apartments: the sewer backed up through the toilets, and the neighbors are having to stay in a hotel while the landlord and plumbers fix things. Wow, the things I miss by breaking a leg.
It's about an hour now until the parents should be back, bringing with them a new wireless router which I will then get to set up. Hopefully it will work. Then I can use my desktop computer in my room, my laptop computer in the living room, my iPod Touch, and my Nokia 770 to access the Internet, and leave the computer room to the parents.
That's all for now. More as events warrant.
