The day thus far

Last night after my last entry, we watched the movie Laura, a classic film noir from 1944. My father, horologist that he is, noticed that the clock that is an important part of the movie does not actually have the ability to strike the Westminster Chime heard throughout; it only has one winding armature instead of the three that it would need. I've subsequently submitted this to the IMDB listing for the movie. After Laura, we watched one of the disc's extras, an A&E biographical special about Vincent Price. It was fascinating—I never knew that Price was actually born in St. Louis, Missouri—though it quite omitted his tenure as the host of PBS's Mystery! and his role on The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo.

After breakfast this morning, Mom & Dad opted to go to town, pick up some feed from the feed store in Purdy, then go over to Cassville to shop at the new Wal-Mart Supercenter there. They got about $35 worth of supplies there, plus $40 of gas to power the generator (it runs for about 12 hours on 5 gallons of gas, not bad), then we went to Taco Bell. An interesting feature of small-town life is that you can't go to Wal-Mart without meeting a couple of people you know. My parents met 5 such—and then two more (and a couple of the ones from Wal-Mart) at the Taco Bell afterward for lunch.

When we got home, we found that the $35 of supplies was not in the car. Thinking that he'd left the cart in the entrance to the store when accosted by one of his old friends, Dad went back to the store to check. But when they reviewed their security camera tapes, it showed that Mom & Dad had taken the cart out of the store (I wasn't there at the time, having thought they'd left already and thus walked over to the gas station) and left the goods in it in the parking lot. Of course they were gone. Fortunately, $35 isn't a lot in the scheme of things, so he just re-bought the missing stuff.

While I was in town, I checked my mail via cellphone (thank goodness for Gmail's mail app) and discovered an email from the fellow to whom my brother recommended me. He'd like to know when I can be in St. Louis for an interview! This is me, being happy.

I also called the management of my apartment to check and see whether the power was back on. The fellow wasn't positive, but thought it was. If so, I'm glad to hear it, so I can stop being as concerned about my cat; I left the thermostat set to about 65 degrees when I went home so as soon as the power came back the apartment should have heated to more livable conditions. I glanced at the Springfield News-Leader while in town also and noticed that the number of Springfieldians without power had dropped from 55,000 to 30,000, which means there would be a 1 in 2 chance it was back just from the numbers.

The parents have the generator on right now so a neighbor can get some water from our well. Interestingly enough, when they turned the pump on, water started flowing into our bathroom…so it may be that some of our internal pipes froze. Oops.

Going to post this, then make the most of the time i have on the computer while the parents are visiting with the neighbor.
