While googling for information about Kino Lillet (as used in James Bond's Casino Royale tipple, the Vesper martini) I came across the most interesting interview with a fellow called "Dr. Cocktail," a cocktail historian who has written a book on the subject.

He has some very fascinating things to say about the history of mixed drinks, what good drinks are and how they came about. I think I wouldn't mind reading that book.
