Sunday Report

The morning found my parents getting me up at the ungodly hour of 6:30 a.m. Or, perhaps, since I was awakened so we could get to church in time for the early service, I should call it the godly hour of 6:30 a.m. Regardless, we got me packed up, headed off to pick up my Dad's mother to attend church with us, and headed up to the small church in Marionville where the parents go now.

After church, we headed up to Springfield, made a brief stop for gasoline (made amusing by Mom intending to go in to be ready to pay to save some time...and getting most of the way to the door before Dad called her back, pointing out it was a self-service credit card pump), then hit Best Buy to pick up my new monitor during the tax-reduced weekend. (I still ended up paying a little over 2% sales tax on it, about $5, but that was $10 less than I would have paid otherwise.) The cashier at first tried to charge us tax claiming the tax-free applied to "educational items only," but we corrected her and got out with the monitor. I bought the extended warranty, too.

After that, we headed on up to Chopsticks, the Chinese place near me that I frequent. I called ahead with our order so that it was mostly ready by the time we arrived, and we ate a good and economical meal together.

When it came time to pull out of the parking lot, we pulled out to the road and Dad looked to make sure the lanes were clear. He looked left, saw that the lane was clear, then started to pull out. I was still looking left, watching from the rear driver-side seat, so I saw what he didn't. At first, I didn't realize he didn't see it, and by the time I did and shouted a warning it was too late. A yellow pickup in the passing lane had started a lane-change into the right lane, with no signal whatsoever. CRUNCH! As we saw when we got to my place, the front left corner of the bumper was scrunched over, had a big crack in it, and was smeared with yellow paint. The truck didn't stop; someone jumped out at the light to inspect the damage to their truck, but it kept going. We got their license number, though. I called the cops as soon as we got to my place, and the dispatcher said to file a walk-in report at their convenience.

Since the parents were in a hurry to make an appointment, this was probably the best of all possible outcomes. So they dropped my stuff on my doorstep, and headed on their way.

I went ahead and moved it all in, fed my cat, and unboxed and set up the monitor. I'm using the monitor now, in fact. After I'd unboxed it and put it on the stand, I had the chance to compare it side by side to my old monitor. It's funny...though the viewing area is the same, it's substantially smaller in size than the old one. Funny what a couple of years of technological advances can do.
