The Week, and the Trip
Apr. 3rd, 2004 10:00 amOnce again, I've let the journal go a while without updating. There wasn't really much of note happening to me for most of the week...just dealing with the same fun ol' genius customers, including the fellow who was so upset with the company that he wouldn't even give me a phone number (apparently I was supposed to be psychic), and the fellow who let a roving sales representative mess up his phone service all to heck because he "liked her"). By Thursday, I couldn't wait for the week to be over...and then it was!
In the "Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln..." department, my annual review came through and my salary has been raised by 28 cents, retroactive to the last week of February. So, at least I get that much more salary for these final months, and for the 6 weeks of severance pay. Also, the forbearance on one of my student loans came through, meaning I'll have a little more money to direct to other debts for the next year.
Friday, what with one thing and another, I didn't get as early a start as I wanted to...you know how trip preparations are. When I did get left, I got halfway out of town before realizing that I had forgotten my emergency-use credit card...so I went back to my apartment, figuring it would be better to take the time and have the card rather than not have it if I needed it.
I headed across to Joplin, to visit the missionary group I'd found about the other week that had produced a Christian Hong Kong movie. The fellow I had talked to had said that I would be able to pick up a few copies for free if I stopped by, but when I did, it turned out that they wanted to charge me $23 for them. Well, I bought one anyway, and the fellow said he would talk to the guy who had told me I'd get them free and return my money if he had indeed meant for me to get one for free.
After that, I headed on up the highway toward Kansas City again, stopping in Harrisonville to get more gas, then heading into town to Union Station to hop on the Internet. Shortly after I got there, Travis (
tbutler) called me on my cellphone, and then came over to meet me. We went to a BBQ place a couple of blocks away for dinner, then headed back to Travis's place with a brief stop at a used CD & DVD shop.
After we got back, we watched an episode of Peter Gunn, then I showed Travis the Chow Yun-Fat Once a Thief, then he showed me the making-of documentary from the Tron DVD set. Pretty interesting. After that, we just sort of noodled around for a couple of hours listening to music off my Powerbook, then we crashed at about 2:30 a.m. I slept like a rock for about five hours, tossed for another, and finally gave it up and am now half-sitting, half-lying in the hide-a-bed in Travis's apartment with my Powerbook on my lap table, listening to music shared from Travis's iTunes library to my computer while typing this entry. Snickers, Travis's large chocolate-and-caramel-colored cat, is lying on the bed near my feet, keeping me company.
