Owwwwwieeee...
Feb. 2nd, 2004 11:25 pmSo last week I had a mild sore throat. I took some vitamin C, drank a lot of orange juice, and it seemed to go away. All is cool, right?
This morning I woke up in the middle of the night with a throat that felt like someone had shoved an iron spike into it. I went in to work, worked half the day, and ended up throwing in the towel at lunch and taking the rest of the day off sick. Now I have a little over a day's worth of sick time left. I don't like to spend it up because there's always the chance I might "really" need it...which is silly, since if I feel bad enough to take it off, then I do really need it, but...I think I'm probably going to take off tomorrow, too. When your whole job involves your voice, putting unnecessary strain on it in the throes of a sore throat just isn't wise.
When I hit the parking lot, I noticed that it had started snowing, and the ground had been just warm enough that the first snow melted, then refroze into a thin, invisible layer of ice. Joy. After I left, I headed to Kmart, the salvage grocery (on the opposite diagonal corner of town from where MCI is...took half an hour to get there), and the nearby Walmart before moseying home. Bought a lot of cans and cups of soup (particularly Campbell's tomato and a couple varieties of chicken noodle), which I have since been guzzling by the quart, along with plenty of peppermint tea. (My first cup was way too strong...I thought that if 1 teabag = 1 8oz mug, 2 should = 1 16 oz thermos mug...I underestimated the power of the tea.)
I'm not looking forward to tonight, as I'm pretty sure I'm going to wake up at least once with two spikes in my throat. That's just the way it goes. Oh well. If I don't strain my voice tomorrow, maybe it'll be all better by Wednesday.
So, how 'bout that Super Bowl thing? Commercials weren't all that great this year, the halftime show stank (though the furor produced by a minor bit of titillation toward the end has provided a good deal of levity for me in the day or so since), and the game...well, the friends of mine who were watching it felt it started out pretty slowly but turned dramatic toward the end of the first half, going right up to a jaw-dropping finish. But I don't know the first thing about football. It's hard to get excited over a competition when you don't actually understand what's going on.
Just about time to get to bed and try to rest up. More anon.
