Saturday night feve--er, report
Jan. 3rd, 2004 10:37 pmAfter walking over to breakfast at Anton's coffeehouse (it's funny, I always want to think of it as "Anton Zilwicki's". Too much Honor Harrington, I guess) and back, Travis and I spent much of the afternoon playing computer games—first we cooperated on a game of Starcraft, then he installed Escape Velocity Nova on my old Wallstreet and I fooled around with that a little; I also showed him some Max Payne.
Soon enough, it was 4 p.m. and time to head down to the parents' place. We piled into my car and commenced the hour-long trip. We hit a bit of scattered shower on the way down, but nothing too bad. We stopped at the west Wal-Mart for gas, then pulled into the Shauncy's just south of Aurora for a single-dip ice cream cone each (Travis got vanilla; I got cappucino chocolate chunk) on the way, and arrived at about 5:20. Dinner was at 6, consisting of barbecue beef brisket sandwiches, hash browns, and corn. It was delicious and much enjoyed by all. After that, Travis surprised all of us by pulling out a DVD he'd burned on his Powerbook while we were there and playing a slide show of pictures (a few of them with me in them from my recent trip up to visit him) set to music. Mom & Dad were quite astonished, and I was impressed...I had no idea how easy it was. Travis went ahead and burned another DVD in the course of about fifteen minutes or so, then we spent more time watching those. It was very impressive; Travis is quite a photographer.
We also headed out to my Dad's workshop to listen to him play a Dean Martin 78 on his old hand-crank Victrola Credenza, and then to look over some of the clocks there and take a look at the library in the back room. After that, we came back in, had blueberry pie, vanilla ice cream, and coffee, and then it was time to head back.
Naturally, just before we headed out to the car, it started coming down a major rainstorm. It rained most of the way back up to Springfield, and I had a bit of difficulty keeping it between the lines a time or two. (Not that Travis really noticed; he napped most of the way back. Can hardly blame him; I wouldn't have minded napping myself, lulled by the motion and the white noise and the rain.) We got back in about 10:15 or so, and in the intervening time I've been typing up this journal entry.
More tomorrow!
