Thanksgiving Thoughts
Nov. 27th, 2003 12:06 pmWell, here it is, Turkey Day. And, since my folks had their Thanksgiving celebration a couple weeks ago, since the younger, married members of the family have been spending it with their spouses' families, I have nowhere to go for it. It's a funny thing...it's not really the family togetherness that I miss, as we already had that and it was fun, and I live close enough to the parents that I can go see them pretty much any time I want to. It's the dinner. The turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls, salad, and so on. I'm hungry, darnit! I suppose I'll end up calling around to see if any restaurants are open and serving Thanksgiving dinner, then going to one of them, but it's just not the same as home-made.
Funny to start my Thanksgiving Day entry with a complaint when I have so much to be thankful for. Even if I limited it to purely secular matters, I have a decent-paying job (and thus, at least an illusory feeling of financial security—I don't have to worry about where my next meal is coming from), a good apartment, an excellent new computer system, a cat who lo—well, okay, tolerates me, and friends and family who care about me. I suppose it's human nature to forget the things we have in light of the things we'd like to have. I don't think it's ever possible for a human being to reach a point of total satisfaction. We're all closer to Madonna's "More" or Weber's "Money Money Money" than to Weird Al's "This is the Life". I guess that's part of why there's a special day set aside for it...to remind us to meditate on it a little every now and then. As the hymn goes, "Count your blessings, name them one by one. Count your blessings, see what God hath done."
So today, I think I'm gonna take a look around my room, and around my life, and think about all the good things I have right now, and all the reasons to be happy. And then I think I'm gonna go find somewhere that's serving turkey. :)
