Well, I'm back from the first day on the Quikdine job. It seemed to go pretty well. Though the normal vehicle I'll be driving is a Ford Focus hatchback, today I was passenger in a big ol' Ford Expedition because it was the only vehicle they had at the moment with a passenger seat. (In the Focus, the passenger seat is replaced by the plug-in cooler; their training Focus was being used as a display vehicle somewhere tomorrow, so it was being detailed and cleaned.) I got in at about 4:10, and Raymond, the dispatcher, got me a polo shirt, vinyl jacket, and cap with the company logo.

I was paired with a driver named Greg, whose accent betrayed his South African origins. He showed me how to use the combination two-way radio/cellphone gadgets that let us keep in touch with the base station, and away we went. He drove me around, showing me the restaurants, and we made our deliveries. I can tell I'm going to like this job, at least for a while.

Not that it went entirely without a hitch, though. Our second delivery of the evening, from a pasta house on the east side of town to an address on the west side of town was incomplete...and we had to go all the way back to the east side to pick up the missing items. (Fortunately, our next order came from a restaurant in the same area to a house also in the same area, so it's not like we wasted a trip.) After that, Greg was trying to impress upon me the importance of not forgetting to give the customer salads. So, what did we do then? We delivered an order, and got 2/3 of the way back to the base station before we realized...we'd forgotten to give them their salads. Whoops.

Anyway, at the end of the night, I got $8—I think about half of what we took in on tips for the evening. Then I came home.

Tomorrow, I get to drive, and the supervisor/dispatcher will be evaluating my performance. Scary.
