Aggravating incident resurfaces from distant past

Oh, for crying out loud.

Over a year ago—Thanksgiving, 2011, I believe—I was visiting my brother in St. Charles, along with my parents, when I got a ticket for parking in a handicapped spot, even though I had a hang tag on my mirror in plain view. I called the traffic court and complained, and they said to send them a photocopy of the hang tag and they'd dismiss the ticket. I did, and thought no more about it. I can't remember whether I received a response or not, but I thought I did.

Today, 18 months later, I got a letter from a collection agency for the $102 amount of the ticket.

I no longer have the correspondence or the hang tag (which expired and I did not renew; actually I don't know whether the tag is still hanging around in a box of stuff from out the car but with my luck it probably got tossed during the great room-cleaning effort a couple months back). They never contacted me about this matter at all during the time I still did. And given that I phoned them rather than wrote them, it will be hard to prove.

This is terribly annoying.
